The purpose of NATO is to “to safeguard the freedom and security of all its members. It does this through political and military means.” The heart of NATO is expressed in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, in which the signatory members agree that: “an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.” The alliance currently has 32 member countries.
