The shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz are located primarily in Omani territorial waters, and partially in Iranian territorial waters, but they are governed by international maritime law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Iran’s powerful naval force has the ability to exert a significant amount of control over the strait, but international forces, including the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet stationed in Bahrain, also intervene to guarantee safe passage.
